I am from Columbia, Missouri, USA, a center for agricultural and animal husbandry. What is being proposed here, dumping of rotting diseased animal carcasses is unlined pits, is a setup for ecological disaster. Ground water *will* be contaminated. This practice must be stopped for the well being of your residents and the return of the tourist trade. I, for one, will not choose to risk my health subjecting myself to contaminated lands and groundwater.

I run a small caravan park at the base of Epyny and so far this year have lost approximately £1500 down to foot and mouth and many of my friends are farmers. The planed use of Epynt can only make things worse, please keep me informed of any support I can give.

I fully support you in your efforts to stop this reckless action.

If the government had reacted with urgency as they should have done at the beginning of this foot and mouth epidemic they would not have all these bodies for burial today. It was madness leaving 3,000 infected lambs alive on Anglesey for almost a week. It will be Powys next. They are pathetically slow in reacting. Too many tack sheep are being allowed on the move from infected areas. This is a recipe for disaster. Soon they will be looking for other areas for burial as a result of their madness. And I agree it is complete madness moving carcasses from a dirty area to a clean area. When will they ever learn? Too late once more.

its totally crazy what is happening here,we are a cleen area, what the hell is the goverment thinking of,i will definatly not vote blair in next time.

Lets keep up the good work and we will win eventually!

i don't understand why the government can't see that that we have enough to cope with eg. foot and mouth, without having the worry of polluting our rivers and then having a enviromental problem. We are with 100%

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 20:39
Yes we support you this could be very damaging for the rivers and valleys. Futhermore it seems senseless to bring corpses to a clean area.

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 20:38
Keep up the good fight for clean water and plain good sense attitudes towards the environment!

My relations live in Wales, one has a farm, and I know how lovely the river Usk is. It dosen't take to much common sense to know that tghe rivers have a very good chance of being cotaminated and the fish life will be gone. All effort must be made to stop this crazy project of burying these carcasses in such a delicate spot.

against burial on epynt bringing foot & mouth to a clean area risks to health, water & enviroment it's a disgrace

Good web site will send around world to my contacts

It's unbelieveable that this is happening - inviting the F & M disease into a clean area and potentially contaminating water courses supporting human, domestic and wildlife.

Your country is too small to destroy the environment and its' water supply. I would think that the tourism industry is far more valuable to the economic health of the entire United Kingdom. Call in help from other more environmentally sensitive countries and GET A GRIP!

Wish I could be there to support you. Keep up your protest - hope you will be successful. Stop the slaughter!

Our hearts go out to you. I have family all over Britain and I am heartsick at what is happening. There are proven effective ways to deal with this such as homeopathic borax for one. What they are doing is sheer madness. People must stand up to the government and say NO to any more killing. We live in Canada and fear that our own government are hiding their heads in the sand....

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 17:10
There is no way they should be dumping in a clean ground! we do still need more people cos it's NOT OVER YET!

Compassion in World Farming would be very concerned if this environmental pollution were to pose a threat to the health of farm animals grazing in the mid Wales area in the future. Very best wishes for your efforts to protect the area from this threat.

Is burying and burning acceptable in any area? I agree that it is foolish to transport at risk animals to clean area's to bury, but this has already happened in Anglesey and will undoubtedly happen in many other areas. I would also like to point out that contrary to what you have reported it was not blood in the rivers in Anglesey turning them red, the Assembly has not disclosed what the substance was, but I would suggest that this fact is noted on your site.
The question we must ask ourselves is how far does this crisis have to go before we the farming community stop putting our own interests before those of the industry as a whole?

I think that it is stupid bringing infected sheep into a clean area where there are no infected sheep. It would take years to get a settled flock of sheep back on Epynt again.

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 14:25
I have concluded from the report given on Monday evening regarding the geology of the site that there is a high probability that pollution from the burial pits will eventually leach into the spring waters of the area and therefore this exercise must be stopped . I am prepared to lobby any authority a list of e-mail addresses would be of assistance if anyone has one.
Good Luck Yours ever,

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 14:13
When is anyone going to listen? This killing has to stop.

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 12:41
It is hard to believe that such stupidity is possible.
You are all in my thoughts.

Sad state of affairs - the government seem to have "lost it"

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at 12:02
What a total disregard of the environment
