Absolutely Outrageous!!!

It seems to me there has been a huge over reaction from the start. Surely killing animals once they are infected and compensating accordingly and not closing the countryside and mass slaughter would be the sensible option.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 10:49
The government should have gone for injecting the animals. I can remember that sixties outbreak we had none of this nonsense just plenty of disinfectant everywhere.....

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 10:52
The only way out is to vaccinate the whole national herd. Both Wales and Scotland will get worse because you have another level of incompetent politicians to make all the wrong decisions. The NIMBY attitude doeS not provide an answer!!.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 10:52
I offer you my full support on this issue.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 12:07
the sheer scale of damage, carnage and terrifying irresponsiblity, by this government is an affront, not only to this country but to the world!

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 12:45
Has the group contacted Prince Charles about this?

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 13:30
As an American I am far removed from your troubles... however, the insanity of this saddens me greatly. To truck in the disease to an otherwise unthreatened region is extremely illogical and to those who who make their homes in the area it is criminal.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 13:41
Whats the idea. Evey1 needs to get there bums up from Swansea and support us even though the damage has well begun.i cannot believe this is happening. An examle of some of the diseases you can get from these carcasses is Weils disease , salmonella, and theres even a chamce of BSE + THE DISINFECTANTS used to " Wash" these lorries down can be fatal for river life and i tell you if youve eva got within half a mile of them then your nose will tell you that they havent been . They reek. Just think of how bad 1 dead sheep smells then multiply that by 300 . Please show support even though its almost too late.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 13:50
As long as they don't then dump the dead sheep in Suffolk, as they aparently started doing last week in a large landfill site we have.

As you state the FMD might, eventally be eraticated but at what price enviromentally. Decisions being taken now will effect the health and mental well being of many for many, many years. I feel for everyone living in the area and think there but for the grace of God go I.

Same as most i guess. Do the people who designated this clean area (with a blindfold and a pin no doubt) have any brains in thier thick heads??? Just because the site is on MOD land, does it make any sense what so ever to bring infected animals into an unaffected area. Not only unaffected but on top of a bloody great hill, where as many as 6 tributaries run off into rivers that will spread the disease rather than contain it. Even the people in some of the affected area's have said not only that they would have found thier own sites for the carcuss's, But they were never asked in the first place!! I could go on for ages regarding this matter, but in summary i believe the people in charge are more apt at playing "pin the tail on the donkey" than they are at making an educated decision about serious environmental solutions.

Dangerous idiots at work

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 14:37
Keep up the good work!!!

The school at Trecastle closed on the last two days of term after close consultation with Powys Education Department. This wasdue to concern for the welfare of the children. The school will re-open on Monday 23rd. April for the beginning of the new term.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 16:04
Instead of killing every animal, whether infected or not, why is there not enough being done to vaccinate animals, particularly in "at risk areas"? Isn't is also strange how after years of farmers rightly complaining about animal prices, that certain sectors have been quoted as saying that they had been "approached by govt' dept's if they could supply fuel etc for a "possible outbreak of F&M"? It seems to me, and a few others, that the epidemic may have been spread on purpose? By the same govt' dept's? This would ensure a "healthy" rise in animal produce prices, and to also keep the UK world prices stable, in the longer term.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 17:17
the moment that the TV cameras turned up it became almost impossible for people to backtrack, even when it became known that only non diseased animals were involved. Mass hysteria has now taken hold. But noone should sign any thing till we have a proper hydrological report from the environment agency

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 18:17
I have said right from the start that this government have NO idea how to treat this outbreak. They have contributed to its spread by their pig headed refusal to follow the recommendations of the report from the 1967 outbreak. Tony Blur is trying to make a nane for himself, but the only name I can think of is IDIOT. Sophie Wessex is right about him and his wife.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 18:56
Although I have considerable sympathy with your viewpoint it does beg the question.... if not at this site..... where or what is the solution?

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 19:38
fully support all acton to stop this crazy action by govt./maff/whoever? How can supposedly intelligent people not think through the consequences of these plans or perhaps they do and like the obvious results.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 19:43
i once visited the very beautiful trecastle area (in a very different and happy convoy) 10 years ago. may i suggest that if anyone finds any dead fish they immediately mail them to their mp's the welsh assembly and english parliament.i wish you all the best of luck in your honest and righteous struggle.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 19:56
I support the stand being made against this outrageous government decision.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 20:26
Surely there is a better way to deal with the waste.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 21:21
Hi from Trecastle Peeps. Probably teaching grandmotherto suck eggs, but are you sending these comments to our friend (ha ha)Carwyn??? Carwyn.Jones@wales.gov.uk He may realise that were not going to give up.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 22:22
Someone asked 'What is the alternative to this transporting and burying?' A fair question, I think, to which my farming neighbour replied 'If infected animals have to be killed, they could be buried where they were killed. If there is room to graze them, there is room to bury them.' Is that a fair answer?

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 22:41
This is just madness. The Government have gone to far to pull back. They'll just keep going to try to salvage their own skins, But whatireparable damage will there be.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 22:44
I fear for us all. I live on the banks of the Fowey. You today, we tomorrow.

Monday, April 9, 2001 at 23:36
The whole situation is too hasty and ill-conceived.Nobody wants these burials in their back-yard,but there must be a more suitable and sustainable back-yard somewhere.
